Contributions to climate change made by marine industries

Commercial fishing boats

Commercial fishing boats

The fishing and aquaculture sectors contribute minimal greenhouse gas emissions in comparison to other NSW industries. Emissions associated with the catch or transport of seafood products, and their production, is the single biggest emission contribution.

Australian fishing vessels use high-speed diesel engines, and 270 million litres of fuel is consumed each year.1 The NSW fishing fleet is responsible for a portion of these emissions. There are more than 200 000 registered recreational boats in NSW and around 2000 registered vessels in the NSW commercial fishing fleet, of these commercial vessels, around 750 are motorised.
