Karlee - student at Tocal College

Karlee - student at Tocal College

Name: Karlee
Course title: Certificate 4 and Diploma in Agriculture
Course location: Tocal College CB Alexander Campus

Describe your typical day

I go to class from 8.30am – 4.00pm five days a week. In the afternoons I have a study group with a couple of other students and we work on assignments and the Diploma course. On the weekends I have a part time job in the nights and in the day I work on assignments.

What attracted you to this course/profession?

I enjoy working outdoors, watching things such as cattle and crops grow and working to help them grow. I love the lifestyle of the land, the people and learning new things everyday.

What subjects did you study at school?

Business studies, Tourism, Automotive, Maths and English

What are your future job prospects looking like?

Once I have completed this course I believe it will help me in securing a position in the beef cattle and cropping industries as that is what I am interested in and working towards managing one day.

What keeps you motivated?

Loving what I am doing, learning so much and looking forward to working in the industry once I have completed my studies.

What is the most interesting thing you have done, discovered or seen in the course of your studies?

Going on a cropping tour last year to Hay and surrounding areas, I learnt so much about cropping, diversifying what you farm, getting through the tough times and the different ways people do things.

How will your work benefit people and/or the environment?

I believe I will be feeding people and animals, and I will be working with the environment not against it starting with helping our waterways by managing irrigation, water run-off and catchments.

What advice do you have for students still at school?

Don’t plan your life around what other people think you should do, otherwise you probably won’t enjoy it. Do something that is going to make you jump out of bed every morning and make you look forward to each day.
