Describe your typical day

Morning and afternoon milking.

Between milkings:

  • fencing and general maintenance;
  • planting crops;
  • management of beef cattle.

What attracted you to this profession?

The lifestyle and the ability to have the option of expanding an operation and take it in a number of different directions.

How did you get started?

My family have been involved in farming for a number of generations.

What initial training did you do?

All the initial training I had undertaken had been on-farm, under the guidance of my family. I have a degree in engineering.

Is there an ongoing need to update your skills?

There is always a need to update your skills. I do this by attending field days and certain training seminars to gain a greater understanding of the skills required.

What keeps you motivated?

The opportunity to continue running a successful enterprise which has the capacity to keep growing, and understanding that you are in complete control of the operations direction.

Who do you work with to do your job?

My father and I work together.

What is the most interesting thing you have done, discovered or seen in your job?

The most interesting aspect of the job is dealing with the breeding programs for both the dairy and beef operations. The variety of skills required in running the operations also ensure that the job is always challenging as well as interesting.

How does your work benefit people and/or the environment?

Implementing sustainable farming practices will help to ensure that products of necessity can be produced whilst not negatively affecting people and the surrounding environment.

What advice do you have for students still at school?

Try to gain an understanding of what the job requires with regards to all aspects. Undertake as much formal training as possible.
